AMD Cancelled Radeon RX 8000 GPU Could Have Featured Over 200 Compute Units

Rumor Alert:

A few months ago, leaks about the RDNA4 GPUs started surfacing on the web, hinting at a powerful variant known as Navi 4C. This particular GPU was expected to feature a multi-chiplet layout with nine compute chiplets. Recently, this rumor has gained further credibility through source code discoveries by Kepler_L2, who mined data related to the processor.

AMD Radeon GPUs Sale

The Key Details:

  1. Nine Shader Engines: The source code lists nine Shader Engines, matching previous rumors exactly. This suggests that AMD had ambitious plans for the high-end Navi 4 design. Unfortunately, those plans were halted when the decision was made to cancel the most powerful variant.

  2. Over 200 Compute Units: According to another user, adroc_thurston, who is familiar with the Navi 4X design, the GPU was meant to feature more than 200 Compute Units. To put this into perspective, the existing Navi 31 GPU features up to 96 Compute Units. If the same core layout were used, the supposed RX 8900 XTX could have been twice as fast.

  3. Advanced Plans for Next-Gen Architecture: Although the Navi 4C won’t see the light of day, this cancellation hints at AMD’s advanced plans for the next-gen GPU architecture. Some of these design elements might find their way into the successor, the Navi 5.

The Unreleased Diagram:

Moore’s Law is Dead recently shared a diagram of AMD’s unreleased RX 8000 GPU, codenamed Navi 4C. In AMD’s original plans, they were preparing four GPUs, but Navi 41 and 42 were allegedly canceled. The leaked diagram showcases a large package substrate accommodating four dies: three AIDs (Active Interposer Dies) and one MID (Multimedia and I/O die).

While we won’t get to experience the power of the Navi 4C, it’s fascinating to glimpse into the world of canceled GPUs and speculate about what could have been. AMD’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of GPU technology remains evident, and we can look forward to their future innovations.
