PC Gaming Weekly - Epic Games acquires Psyonix
8/01/2019Epic Games made big news Wednesday afternoon after it announced that it’s acquiring Psyonix, the studio behind Rocket League (think soccer with cars). It’s another sign of just how willing Epic is to capitalize on the mind-boggling financial success of Fortnite and stock its Epic Games Store with fantastic games.
I thought of two things when I saw the news:
- How will Epic use Psyonix’s esports expertise for Fortnite?
- How will the Internet react to the news? (Poorly)
But I don’t want to think about the second one. Let’s instead look at Epic and esports.
Rocket League came out in 2015, and it didn’t take long for it to become an esport. Epic launched a $100 million esports push earlier this year. Epic is serious about competitive gaming, and adding the esports expertise — such as how to tune your game once you’ve developed a league, as Psyonix has with Rocket League in 2016 – will be crucial to Fortnite becoming a long-lasting esport.
I’m fascinated by this acquisition from the esports angle. What about you?
