PC Gaming Weekly - Streaming games
8/01/2019Who says July is the slowest time of the year? I’ve downloaded eight games just this week to test out or review. And they’re all PC games.
But that’s not what I’m going to talk about today. On Tuesday, EA said it gets 8 million to 10 million people playing Apex Legends a week. I left “still” off this sentence on purpose. Getting millions of people playing your game each week feels like one heckuva accomplishment.
It’s not the 50 million that Apex Legends got when it launched out-of-the-blue in March, but no game is going to sustain that hype. But because it’s no longer in the top three games on Twitch, it’s “dead.”
Apex Legends isn’t in danger of dying anytime soon. It has an amazing player base and a dedicated studio that’s one of the best around at creating compelling shooter experiences.
And then I think Heroes of the Storm, another game people fear is dying. Blizzard Entertainment killed its esports program in December, and players predicted its death would come shortly after. But the studio said it would continue supporting the MOBA, and lo! Blizzard announced a new ranked system and hero earlier this week.
So while Teamflight Tactics may be the hotness on Twitch, don’t forget that just because steamers and viewers tell you a game’s dead doesn’t mean millions of people aren’t playing it.
