Game over for E3 2020, and more

Good morning! Both E3 2020 and Coachella have reportedly been canceled, and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo might be postponed too, which is all pretty massive news out of the gate.

E3 2020, set for LA for June 9-11 this year, is expected to be canceled with an announcement later today at 9:30 AM Los Angeles time.

  • That will mark the end of a run since 1996, where major games and indie titles are showcased and the world celebrated gaming.

  • The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), according to reports, wrote a private memo to partners on Tuesday night that it is “exploring options for an online E3 event this summer.”

  • Before this, game publisher Devolver Digital tweeted one of the first hints, saying, “Cancel your E3 flights and hotels, y’all.”

  • This may be the beginning of the end for E3. Already major game publishers and the likes of Nintendo, Sony, EA, and Blizzard have gone from attendees to maybes or never-seen-agains over the years.

  • Sony ditched 2019 and 2020 despite the likely launch of the PlayStation 5 later this year.

  • Microsoft/Xbox was hanging in there, but who knows what we’ll now see for the Xbox Series X.

  • E3 2021 is therefore a little shaky: everyone wants their own event, and many comments reacting to the news are people saying: ‘I was excited, and I but no E3 won’t change much.’

  • Many are calling for E3 to start over: the use of pre-rendered cinematic trailers instead of actual game footage generated hype, but the actual gameplay was a long way off what was shown.

  • Or, a 'first look' was shown, with the game not out by the following E3. ('Breath of the Wild sequel', I'm looking at you)

  • Maybe it’s the start of something new and better.

  • In the meantime: Fs in chat.
