Is this the Google Pixel 4a?

Good morning! Some of you have lost an hour’s sleep on Sunday. Some of you will be debilitated. Extra strong coffees and a few small naps in your working-from-home office...

The Google Pixel 3a was one of the best smartphones in 2019 despite being a decidedly mid-range option. But it killed on value and became one of the most recommended phones by my colleagues and I.

It makes the Pixel 4a, which would normally be expected in about May this year, highly anticipated.

Now some alleged real-life images have leaked.

  • They’re kinda terrible, low-res images. The phone doesn’t look well cared for, and the pics were posted in a private Facebook group.

  • All bad signs for the potential to be accurate and real.

  • That said, here’s how it looks above

What do we see in the Pixel 4a?

  • There’s a squared-off camera bump from the Pixel 4, a borderless screen and a punch-hole camera, a fingerprint sensor on the back, and a white lock/power button.

  • Those do look like what we'd hope or expect to see from the evolution of the Pixel series.

  • Also, the headphone jack remains, and we see a fabric case typical of the Pixel line, although it’s a fairly weird red/blue color mix.

  • The Pixel 4a will reportedly be powered by the Snapdragon 730 SoC, and early reports are 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

Real?

  • The leaks are not highly likely to be accurate. Notable weird things include no visible speaker grille at the top of the phone, and no clock in the status bar of the phone is unusual but it could just be Google firmware for the phone, for now.

  • And low-res images of leaks, over the years, have tended to be low-res to reduce possible scrutiny.

  • Who knows. But it kinda looks ok, and if the Pixel 4a is priced well, and actually looks like this, it could entice upgrades.

  • With Google I/O canceled, and manufacturing/supply chain availability still in question in light of COVID-19, we’re not sure if we’ll see it in May.
