After much speculation, Nintendo has finally provided some concrete information about their plans for a Switch successor. According to their most recent earnings report, they promise to announce the Switch 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) sometime during this fiscal year, which extends until the end of March 2025.

Release Timing and Uncertainty

While rumors suggest that the Switch 2 might be unveiled this fall and released in March 2025, Nintendo has not officially confirmed this timeline. During an earnings Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned that their current sales forecasts do not include the “Nintendo Switch successor device.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Switch 2 won’t come out this fiscal year, but it does indicate that Nintendo is unable or unwilling to commit to a release before the end of March 2025 at this time.

Sales Goals and Historical Context

Nintendo aims to sell another 13.5 million Switch units in FY2025. Achieving this goal would surpass the sales of iconic consoles like the Nintendo DS (154 million units sold) and possibly even the PlayStation 2 (155 million units sold). Despite the age of the original Switch, Nintendo remains ambitious in its sales projections.

Supply Issues and Physical Games

Interestingly, Nintendo assured investors that supply issues related to chip shortages or other components should not be a problem for the launch of the Switch 2. Furukawa stated, “At this point, we are not seeing semiconductor supply issues like the ones that were happening until the year before last.” Additionally, he confirmed that the company would continue to emphasize physical games for the Switch 2, dispelling any speculation about a digital-only approach.
