Xbox to Go Full Multi-platform with Halo, Forza and Gears of War on PlayStation, Says Corden

Around three months ago, rumors began circulating that Microsoft was considering making several Xbox exclusive games available on other platforms. These rumors included heavyweights like Gears of War, Starfield, and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. During a subsequent “business update event,” Xbox executives confirmed that a few games were indeed making the jump to PlayStation and/or Nintendo Switch consoles. These games turned out to be Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves. However, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, labeled this move an experiment and cautioned against assuming that all major games would follow suit:

“I don’t think we should, as an industry, ever rule out a game going to any other platform. We’re focused on these four games and learning from the experience. I don’t want to create a false expectation on those other platforms that this is somehow the first four to get over the dam and then the dam’s going to open and everything else is coming. That’s not the plan today.”

Despite this caveat, it’s clear that Microsoft was open to the idea, especially if the experiment proved successful. While we don’t have hard sales data yet, Sea of Thieves performed well in pre-orders ahead of its PlayStation launch.

Jez Corden’s Revelation

Recently, renowned Xbox insider and Windows Central journalist Jez Corden reignited the discussion in the Xbox Two Discord channel. According to Corden, all of Xbox’s first-party games will eventually come to PlayStation, even flagship titles like Halo and Forza. He also hinted at a future ecosystem that resembles Steam, allowing side-loading of PC stores similar to Steam itself. Microsoft had previously suggested this direction. The benefits of such an approach include more affordable prices due to sales and a more open environment for developers.

Corden further elaborated on Twitter, stating that “everything is going (to PlayStation and/or Switch).” He also drew parallels between Xbox consoles and the niche filled by the Steam Deck for PC handhelds.

A Shift in Strategy?

While this information remains a rumor for now, it does indicate the direction Microsoft may be willing to take. Perhaps we’ll learn more during the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase scheduled for Sunday, June 9. In the meantime, let’s consider how the gaming community feels about this potential shift:

  1. Should Xbox go full multi-platform?
    • Yes: Some believe it’s time to end exclusivity.
    • Only if PlayStation does the same: A conditional approach.
    • No: Concerns about betraying the Xbox community.
