AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 and Radeon 890M: GPD’s Performance Claims

AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 and Radeon 890M: GPD’s Performance Claims

Introduction

Chinese company GPD recently unveiled the “DUO OLED,” a unique laptop design featuring two full 13.3-inch AMOLED screens. While the DUO OLED was initially expected to offer up to the Ryzen 7 8840U, GPD surprised us by adopting the more powerful AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU. Let’s dive into the details and explore the performance claims surrounding this intriguing laptop.

The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU

The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is AMD’s flagship “Strix Point” processor. It boasts a total of 12 Zen5/Zen5c cores and comes equipped with the Radeon 890M graphics solution. The Radeon 890M features 16 RDNA3.5 Compute Units, promising improved performance over its predecessor.

Performance Benchmarks

CPU Performance

GPD claims that the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 matches the desktop Ryzen 9 7950X in single-core Cinebench 2024 benchmarks and even surpasses the Ryzen 9 5950X in multicore tests.

GPU Performance

The most exciting claim revolves around graphics performance. According to GPD, the Radeon 890M is a whopping 36% faster in gaming than the Radeon 780M. In 3DMark’s TimeSpy benchmark, the Radeon 890M achieves a score of 4221, outperforming the Radeon 780M running at 72W TDP by 31% and even surpassing the 54W TDP variant of the Radeon 780M (which matches the 890M’s TDP).

RDNA 3.5 Architecture

The AMD Radeon 890M GPU, based on the new RDNA 3.5 architecture, features 16 Compute Units (CUs) and 1024 stream processors. Compared to the previous generation, it offers a 33% increase in performance and an impressive 36% improvement in gaming performance. With LPDDR5x 7500 MT/s memory, the bandwidth is also significantly improved.

Competing Against NVIDIA

GPD boldly claims that the Radeon 890M outperforms the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (mobile version) and comes close to the RTX 3050. Here’s how it stacks up:

  • GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop (50W): 4487 (100%)
  • Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Radeon 890M (54W): 4221 (94%)
  • GeForce RTX 2050 Laptop (45W): 3794 (85%)

Memory Matters

GPD acknowledges that part of the graphics performance uplift is due to higher memory specs. The Strix Point APU supports LPDDR5-7500 memory, a choice many laptop makers seem to be adopting.

Release Date

While GPD hasn’t confirmed the DUO OLED’s release date, this upgrade to the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 will likely push the product launch by at least a month or two.
