Valve has made it clear that a Steam Deck 2 is in the works, but don’t hold your breath for an imminent release. According to Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve developer, the company is aiming for stability over rapid upgrades. In an interview with CNBC, he emphasized that the current performance target will remain stable for a couple of years. In other words, Valve wants every Steam Deck to offer a consistent gaming experience, ensuring that all devices can play the same games.
While some may find this disappointing, I’m perfectly content with the current Steam Deck. As someone who wasn’t seeking the latest AAA titles, I purchased the Deck for its convenience. It’s my go-to for quick gaming sessions, whether I’m on the sofa, in bed, or commuting on the subway. The ability to tackle my Steam backlog—now totaling 369 verified and playable games—has been a game-changer. I’ve rediscovered gems like “Beyond a Steel Sky,” relaxed with “Dorfromantik,” and even indulged in some old-school GTA action with “Rustler” and quirky fishing in “Dredge.” Not to mention my occasional return to the time-consuming vortex of “The Binding of Isaac”!
Valve hasn’t ruled out hardware improvements, though. While they aim to maintain performance consistency, they might consider quality-of-life enhancements. Imagine a Steam Deck with a larger battery or an OLED screen. Even so, I doubt I’ll be tempted to upgrade. The Steam Deck, while not as accessible as the Nintendo Switch or as powerful as the Asus ROG Ally, suits me perfectly. I’m confident it’ll continue to bring joy for years to come, regardless of any Deck 2 rumors that may surface.
So, fellow gamers, embrace the current Steam Deck—it’s a treasure trove of gaming possibilities. And remember, patience pays off when you’re building your own backlog of shamefully unplayed titles! 🎮👾
