AMD Krackan Point to Support Up to LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s Memory
8/30/2024AMD Krackan Point to Support Up to LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s Memory
AMD Krackan Supports Faster Memory Than Strix Point
Claimed to Support Up to 8000 MT/s
AMD is gearing up to unveil its new APU designs for both mainstream and enthusiast markets. However, this announcement is not expected before January, when these products are rumored to be revealed. The two APUs, Strix Halo and Krackan (or Kraken Point), will feature Zen5 and RDNA3.5 architectures.
Recently, a rumor suggested that Krackan supports LPDDR5X-7500 memory. This rumor originated from a tweet with emojis that was interpreted that way. However, this information appears to be outdated or incorrect, as a Lenovo Product Manager has now confirmed that Krackan does indeed support faster memory.
Although LPDDR5X-8000 memory is not currently used by any AMD product, this is not the first time such speeds have been mentioned. The Strix Halo was also listed with 8000 MT/s in a leaked document. This suggests that both APU designs will likely support the same memory speed, which makes a lot of sense given that they launch alongside each other.
Strix Halo Specs
Officially, the Strix Point supports up to LPDDR5X-7500 memory, so Krackan’s 8000 MT/s is already an upgrade within the same product family. However, Krackan is not a successor or replacement for Strix Point. It is a quad-core processor with limited graphics capabilities (up to 8 RDNA3.5 CUs) and is likely targeting mainstream laptop designs rather than the gaming segment.
According to rumors, AMD will launch Strix Halo and Krackan at CES 2025, but this has not been confirmed yet.
