The HDMI Forum has officially released the full specifications for HDMI 2.2, marking a significant advancement in display technology. This new standard promises to deliver unprecedented bandwidth and capabilities, setting the stage for the next generation of high-resolution and high-refresh-rate displays.

Key Features and Enhancements:

  • Massive Bandwidth Increase: HDMI 2.2 boasts a staggering 96Gbps bandwidth, a substantial leap from the current Ultra High Speed HDMI cables' 48Gbps. This increased capacity is crucial for handling the demanding data requirements of future display technologies.
  • Support for Extreme Resolutions and Refresh Rates: The specification enables support for resolutions up to 16K at 60 frames per second (FPS) and 12K at 120 FPS. For current 8K displays, HDMI 2.2 allows for uncompressed 4:4:4 chroma at 60 FPS, ensuring crisp and vibrant colors. 4K enthusiasts will also benefit from 4:4:4 chroma at 240 FPS, supporting both 10-bit and 12-bit color depths.
  • Introducing "Ultra96" Cables: To help consumers identify cables that fully support the new HDMI 2.2 standard, the HDMI Forum is introducing the "Ultra96" feature name. This label will be present on certified cables that support 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps bandwidths, guaranteeing compliance and optimal performance. These cables will be part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, requiring rigorous testing for each model length.
  • Improved Audio/Video Synchronization: The new specification includes a Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), designed to enhance audio and video synchronization.
