AMD Expands FSR 4 Support to 85 Games with Latest Radeon Driver Update
AMD’s latest Radeon driver update (Adrenalin Edition 25.9.1) significantly broadens support for its FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling and frame generation technology. With this update, FSR 4 is now compatible with a total of 85 DirectX 12 games that previously supported FSR 3.1, enabling gamers to enjoy enhanced visuals and performance.
Seamless Upgrade to FSR 4 for RDNA 4 GPU Users
Users with Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture can effortlessly enable FSR 4 following the driver update. After installing the latest Adrenalin Edition, gamers need to switch to FSR 3.1 within supported game settings and then toggle FSR 4 through AMD’s software interface. This process overrides the in-game FSR 3.1 implementation with the newer and more advanced FSR 4.
Compatibility and Limitations
FSR 4 support is currently limited to DirectX 12 titles that incorporate a signed FSR 3.1 DLL following AMD’s developer guidelines. Titles running on Vulkan or using third-party plugins are not compatible with this upgrade. Despite the expanded official support, AMD’s FSR platform still trails Nvidia’s DLSS in terms of adoption and flexibility.
Community Efforts Boost FSR 4 Reach
The enthusiast community has stepped up with innovative tools like OptiScaler, which re-route popular upscalers including DLSS, XeSS, and FSR 2 into FSR 4 with frame generation capabilities, extending its usability beyond official limits. Some users have also discovered that manually replacing FSR 3.1 DLL files with those from AMD’s latest FSR SDK enables FSR 4 in unsupported games—although these unofficial methods come with risks and limitations.
Looking Ahead: Broader GPU Support on the Horizon?
Recently, AMD unintentionally uploaded the complete FSR 4 source code to GitHub while updating its FidelityFX SDK. This revealed work on an alternative int8-based version of the upscaler, hinting that AMD may plan to support a wider range of GPUs with FSR 4 in the future.
For now, the latest official Radeon driver brings much-needed stability and compatibility for FSR 4 in supported games, while the modding community’s efforts showcase the strong demand to expand this cutting-edge upscaling technology.
