Beyond Oblivion: Mapping Bethesda’s Remaster Roadmap for 2026 and Beyond
Sunday, December 21, 2025Beyond Cyrodiil: Tracking Bethesda’s Remaster Roadmap for 2026
With Oblivion Remastered’s shadow-drop becoming a historic success, we look at the leaked plans for the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave.

The Success of the "Shadow-Drop" Experiment
In April 2025, Bethesda achieved what many thought impossible: a successful, surprise "shadow-drop" of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. By the end of the year, the title had reached over 9 million players and won "Best Remaster" at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards. In a recent December 2025 interview with IGN, Todd Howard confirmed that BGS is "really, really pleased" with this approach, suggesting it is now a blueprint for the future.
The Road to 2026: Fallout 3 & Beyond
With The Elder Scrolls VI still deep in development, Bethesda is utilizing external partnerships—specifically with Virtuos—to keep their legacy IPs fresh. Here is the corrected roadmap based on the latest 2025 leaks:
- Fallout 3 Remastered (April 2026): This project is an "open secret" within Bethesda. After being pushed back from its original 2024 window due to development shifts, it is now targeted for a Spring 2026 launch to capitalize on the hype of Fallout Season 2 on Prime Video.
- Fallout: New Vegas (Anniversary Bundle): While a full ground-up remaster hasn't been confirmed, Todd Howard has teased that Bethesda is "doing the most" with the Fallout franchise right now. A high-resolution "Anniversary Bundle" for New Vegas is currently the most credible rumor for late 2026.
- The Morrowind Remake Challenge: Howard remains cautious regarding The Elder Scrolls III. Because of its outdated "dice-roll" combat and lack of full voice acting, it is viewed internally as a full remake project rather than a remaster, likely placing it far beyond 2026.
The Strategic Shift: "One to Two Big Things per Year"
Blizzard President Johanna Faries recently noted that Microsoft expects high standards for their "gem" IPs. This aligns with Bethesda's new cadence: ensuring there is at least one major launch per year. By remastering classics like Oblivion and Fallout 3, Bethesda maintains market presence and satisfies fan demand while the main team works on next-gen technology.
