Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Officially Announced—A Spiritual Successor to KOTOR

The galaxy far, far away is preparing for a new epic adventure. During The Game Awards 2025, Lucasfilm Games officially unveiled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. This new title is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG, and has been revealed as a spiritual successor to the beloved classic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR).

The announcement was accompanied by a teaser trailer, which showcased a female Force user, an HK-series-like droid, and a starship approaching a downed Sith capital ship on a remote, snowy world.

A Legendary Return to the Old Republic

What has fans most excited is the talent leading the new project. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is being developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The project is helmed by Casey Hudson, who served as the director for the original KOTOR as well as the Mass Effect trilogy.

In an official statement, Hudson described the game as an opportunity to explore a "contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience." He noted that their ambition is to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion that defined KOTOR.

Shaping Your Path

The game is set in the ancient Old Republic era, a time "on the brink of rebirth." The official description highlights the central theme of player choice: it will be an unforgettable experience where "every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness." Players will step into the role of a Force user as they journey through the galaxy.

While the game is considered a spiritual successor, it is not a direct sequel or continuation of the KOTOR story. Instead, it will follow in the original game's footsteps by offering a new story that captures the spirit of the era.

The title is currently in early development and is planned for release on PC and consoles, though a release date has not yet been announced.
