Deep dive series so far
Per Blizzard, the World of Warcraft: Forever class deep dive series keeps moving with a Mage and Shaman installment published October 7, 2026 on the official Warcraft site. The post sits alongside Blizzard's own comment count of 142 and frames both classes as early looks at how each class is being updated while holding on to the core tools and playstyles that define them.
Per Blizzard, Mage updates lean into the fantasy of choosing the right spell for the moment. That can mean layering control through Frost, building toward heavy Fire critical strikes, or using Arcane power to amplify the rest of the toolkit. Blizzard says new and revised talents give each school a stronger identity while creating more room for cross-school builds that mix familiar strengths in new ways.
Per Blizzard, Shaman updates focus on making iconic tools more responsive in the middle of combat. Longer-lasting weapon imbues, faster and longer-lasting totems, totem tracking, Call spells, Totemic Recall, and Totemic Projection all aim to reduce repeated setup while keeping placement, timing, and elemental utility central. Talent updates across Elemental Combat, Enhancement, and Restoration further support spellcasting, melee, healing, and hybrid play.
Shared rules apply to both. Per Blizzard, talents become available starting at level 10 and keep a familiar structure, including one-point milestone talents at 11, 21, and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point milestone. Players can change talents, including Legacy talents, at a class trainer in one of the major cities. Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40. Blizzard closes with the standing beta caveat: class abilities and talents may continue to evolve throughout the beta test and are subject to additional changes.
Mage: the right spell
Per Blizzard, Blizzard frames the Mage update around making each spell school feel more active in moment-to-moment decisions. Arcane gains new ways to set up and empower follow-up casts. Fire continues to reward critical strikes and timing. Frost holds onto its control-focused strengths while gaining new interactions that help it connect with the rest of the class.
Baseline changes start small but matter for server economy. Comprehension is a new Mage-specific minor tradeskill that lets Mages read and decipher scrolls dropped by creatures in the world, with various benefits players discover in adventures. The specific ability used to attempt Comprehension is Comprehend Scroll, found in the General tab of the spellbook. Cone of Cold has its duration decreased, part of a general fix to reduce gold farmers and experience boosters kiting large numbers of creatures via repetitive low-risk gameplay.
The headline baseline addition is Frostfire Bolt, a new spell learned at level 40 considered both Fire and Frost. Most talents that benefit either school benefit it too. With a 3 second cast time, Frostfire Bolt deals large upfront damage like Fireball and applies a debuff with both damage over time and a movement speed Slow. It always uses the higher of the Mage's spell damage bonuses to Fire or Frost, and the lower of the target's resistances to Fire or Frost. Per Blizzard, the intent is to make builds including both Frost and Fire talents have a spell that benefits from them both, opening many new Mage talent builds. One hybrid example: take both Ignite and Ice Shards so Frostfire Bolt deals 200% damage on critical strikes and then another 40% of that as Ignite damage, for 280% total on critical strikes. Mage Armor also gets a Mana regeneration bonus from Spirit increase.
Arcane talent changes reshape the tree. Wand Specialization now requires only 2 talent points for the same benefit. Arcane Focus is redesigned to grant increased chance to hit with Arcane spells. Improved Channeling, formerly Improved Arcane Missiles, now also grants Arcane Blast protection against spellcasting interruption from taking damage. Arcane Subtlety moves from row 1 down to row 2 with a slightly stronger resistance-ignoring effect and slightly weaker threat reduction. Magic Absorption now has a 1 second cooldown on triggering the effect to prevent abuses. Arcane Concentration's trigger chance is reduced when a Mage casts spells of a significantly lower rank, an adjustment Blizzard applies because gold farmers fished for procs with low mana cost low rank spells; Blizzard says the same low-rank penalty applies to multiple talents across many classes. Arcane Resilience moves from row 3 up to row 2, drops the gold medal slot, and is now 2 points for the same effect. Arcane Geometry is a new row 3 talent increasing the range of Arcane spells. Arcane Impact, formerly Improved Arcane Explosion, now increases the critical strike chance of all Arcane spells.
Arcane Blast is the new 11-point gold medal talent and a new spell: a redesign of the one known from early expansions. It deals immediate damage with a 2.5 second cast, then increases the damage done by all other Mage spells and increases its own Mana cost. Increases stack up to 4 times and last 8 seconds or until any other spell is cast. Per Blizzard, older versions encouraged casting only that one spell; this version encourages Mages to make use of other spells in the toolkit after building an Arcane Blast stack. Arcane Shielding, formerly Improved Mana Shield, raises Mana Shield's mana cost reduction and also increases resistances granted by Mage Armor. Improved Counterspell is slightly redesigned: 1 point now grants a shorter duration Silence all the time instead of a 50% chance of any Silence at all. Arcane Meditation increases Mana regeneration from Spirit while casting and now requires Arcane Concentration as a prerequisite. Missile Barrage is a new 16-point gold medal talent granting a chance for Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt, and Frostfire Bolt to cause the next Arcane Missiles to channel twice as fast and cost no Mana, with the chance doubled for Arcane Blast. Arcane Mind is redesigned to increase Intellect instead of maximum Mana and also increases the critical strike damage bonus of Arcane Spells, no longer requiring Arcane Resilience. Arcane Instability drops its Presence of Mind prerequisite. Arcane Power now requires Presence of Mind. Magic Attunement moves to baseline.
Fire changes build toward crit timing. Wake of Fire, formerly Improved Fire Blast, moves from row 2 up to row 1, reduces the cooldown on Fire Blast by even more, and each kill of a non-trivial target makes the next Fire Blast gain a large increase to critical strike chance. Incineration, formerly Incinerate, moves from row 3 up to row 1 and now increases the critical strike chance of Ice Lance and Arcane Blast in addition to Fire Blast and Scorch. Improved Fireball now also reduces the cast time of Frostfire Bolt. Ignite now provides a unique debuff per Mage caster rather than the Classic Era shared debuff, solving threat and damage attribution problems, and improvements ensure damage is not lost when critical strikes are timed too closely together, as with Season of Discovery. Impact, like Arcane Concentration, now decreases trigger chance when casting low rank spells. Burning Soul now requires 3 talent points for the same effect. Improved Scorch's debuff now benefits only the casting Mage. Heating Up is a new row 4 talent requiring Pyroblast as a prerequisite: non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, and Scorch grant a 25% reduction to the cast time of the next Pyroblast, stacking up to 3 times. With 3 stacks, Pyroblast cast time drops to 1.5 seconds, Forever's variation on Hot Streak ideas from early expansions. Blast Wave no longer requires Pyroblast as a prerequisite. No Fire talents removed.
Frost keeps control but sheds farming power. Elemental Precision now increases the chance to hit with Fire and Frost spells instead of reducing the target's chance to resist. Permafrost is a minor redesign: instead of adding 1/2/3 seconds to all Chill effects, it now increases their duration by 11/22/33%, preventing excessively long Improved Blizzard. Frost Channeling moves from row 4 up to row 3. Ice Lance is a new 11-point gold medal talent: instant cast, low damage, but damage increased by 300% when the target is Frozen or treated as Frozen by Fingers of Frost. Improved Blizzard's movement speed Slow is reduced, maxing at a 40% Slow instead of 65%, to reduce AoE farming of instances by gold farmers and boosters. Ice Block moves from row 5 up to row 4 and becomes the 16-point gold medal talent. Shatter drops its Improved Frost Nova prerequisite. Cold Snap moves from row 3 down to row 5 and becomes the 21 point gold medal talent, with cooldown increased to 10 minutes from 5. Fingers of Frost is a new row 5 talent and a prerequisite of Ice Lance: Chill effects have a chance to grant 1/2 charges, and Fingers of Frost causes casts to treat the target as if it were Frozen. Winter's Chill now benefits only the casting Mage, with its critical strike chance increase applying only to Frostbolt and Ice Lance. No Frost talents removed.
Per Blizzard, Mages remain one of the most powerful and resourceful damage dealing classes in World of Warcraft, with strong crowd control in Polymorph, the strongest and most varied ranged area damage of any class, and extreme fragility if caught in melee. Arcane manipulates and consumes Mana for more damage. Fire produces devastatingly heavy hits and critical damage. Frost grants control still unrivaled by any other class. Mages stay useful to raids and parties for unique buffs, food and water supply, amazing control, and strong ranged single-target and area of effect damage.

Shaman: totems in combat
Per Blizzard, the Shaman update pushes more of the class's power into active decisions during an encounter. Totems can be summoned, tracked, dismissed, and repositioned with greater control, while weapon imbues and new talent paths give Elemental Combat, Enhancement, and Restoration more ways to contribute without interrupting the pace of play.
Baseline totem changes start with the global cooldown: all totems now have a 1.0 second global cooldown, down from 1.5. All totems that provide persistent buffs now last 5 minutes instead of 2; shorter duration totems are unaffected. A totem tracking UI now shows which totems are active and their remaining duration, and can instantly unsummon a totem by right clicking the UI. Resistance Totems now provide their resistance bonus to the entire raid group.
Weapon Imbues are massively extended: Frostbrand Weapon, Flametongue Weapon, Rockbiter Weapon, and Windfury Weapon all last 60 minutes instead of 5, and they can now be active at the same time as temporary weapon enchantments like Sharpening Stones, Weight Stones, and Wizard Oil. Fire Nova Totem is removed and replaced with a new Fire Nova spell that causes an eruption of Fire damage at the location of your current Fire Totem, so a Fire Totem can be placed and triggered for AoE damage multiple times without replacing the totem. Windfury Totem is no longer a weapon enchantment and is now a party-wide buff; Shamans cannot benefit while they have Windfury Weapon on weapon, and parties cannot benefit from Windfury Totem at the same time as Grace of Air or Flametongue Totem. Flametongue Totem mirrors that: now a party-wide buff, unavailable to a Shaman with Flametongue Weapon on weapon, and incompatible with Windfury Totem in the same party. Tranquil Air Totem is removed.
New totem logistics spells anchor the fantasy of totem flow. Totemic Projection, learned at level 22, teleports all totems to a new location within 30 yards, 1 minute cooldown, 25% of base mana. Totemic Recall, learned at level 20, instantly destroys all totems and returns 25% of their Mana cost; Blizzard notes a beta bug where Mana is not currently being refunded. Call of the Elements, learned at level 20, unlocks the totem bar UI with a pre-programmed set of 4 totems, one of each element, summoned after a 3 second cast for the sum Mana cost of all 4. Call of the Spirits at level 30 adds a second pre-programmed set. Call of the Ancestors at level 40 adds a third set. Lightning Bolt ranks 4 and up lose cast time from 3 seconds to 2.5 with a reduced spell power coefficient to match. Chain Lightning all ranks drops from 2.5 seconds to 2 with a matching coefficient reduction.
Elemental Combat talents: Convection now also reduces the Mana cost of Lava Burst. Concussion no longer applies to Frost Shock or Flame Shock. Reverberation moves from row 3 up to row 2. Call of Flame now also increases damage done by Flame Shock, Fire Nova, and Lava Burst. Elemental Devastation moves from row 4 up to row 2, a deliberate move earlier so Enhancement Shamans can spend points on Elemental talents. Elemental Focus's trigger chance is reduced when casting low rank spells. Elemental Alacrity, formerly Lightning Mastery, moves from row 6 up to row 3, needs only 3 points for max rank, and now reduces cast time of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by only 0.5 seconds at max rank while also reducing Lava Burst cast time; Blizzard says it was too deep for leveling and twice as strong as similar talents on other classes, causing a spell power scaling problem, so its potency was reduced and its position moved much earlier. Improved Fire Nova, formerly Improved Fire Totems, is redesigned to increase Fire Nova's damage and reduce its cooldown. Eye of the Storm is redesigned to grant resistance against spell pushback from damage while casting Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and Lava Burst, whereas formerly it only triggered after a critical strike; Blizzard says it was previously useful mainly in PvP and is now broadly useful. Call of Thunder moves from row 3 down to row 4, requires Elemental Alacrity, and becomes the 16-point gold medal talent granting 3% increased critical strike chance to Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning. Elemental Reach now also increases the range of Fire Nova and Lava Burst by up to 6 yards and Flame Shock by up to 15 yards. Lighting Overload is a new row 5 talent granting a chance on every cast of Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning to instantly cast a second copy at no Mana cost, half damage, and no threat. Earthbound is a new 21-point gold medal talent making Earthbind Totem instantly immobilize nearby targets for 5 seconds when cast. Elemental Fury moves from row 5 down to row 6 and now requires Call of Thunder. Lava Burst is the new 31-point gold medal talent: a 2.5 second cast dealing Fire damage increased by 20% if the target is afflicted by your Flame Shock, with a 10 second cooldown. Removed: Elemental Mastery, which Blizzard calls a problematic talent that would have made Elemental Shamans too strong in PvP if damage were appropriate in PvE.
Enhancement talents: Earth's Grasp moves from Elemental to row 1. Thundering Strikes moves from row 2 up to row 1 and now increases critical strike chance of all spells and attacks instead of only weapon attacks. Ancestral Knowledge now increases Intellect instead of maximum Mana. Mental Dexterity is a new row 2 talent increasing Attack Power by a percentage of Intellect. Improved Ghost Wolf rank 1 now makes Ghost Wolf usable indoors while reducing its cast time by 1 second, and rank 2 makes Ghost Wolf instant. Elemental Weapons moves from row 5 up to row 3. Shamanistic Focus is a new 11-point gold medal talent reducing the Mana cost of Shocks and Lightning Shield by a large percentage. Anticipation now grants twice as much Dodge chance. Toughness no longer increases Armor and now increases Stamina by a percentage. Flurry now increases attack speed by 5% per talent point up to 25%, down from 30%, and now requires Mental Dexterity instead of Thundering Strikes. Stormstrike moves from the 31-point gold medal to the 16-point gold medal, with cooldown reduced from 20 seconds to 8, and now increases damage done by your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Earth Shock spell by 20% instead of the next 2 Nature attacks from any attacker. Spirit Weapons, formerly Parry, is now a 21-point talent that also reduces threat while you are not using Rockbiter Weapon and increases threat while you are using Rockbiter Weapon, helping Enhancement Shamans manage threat now that their damage is competitive while retaining their unique high-threat temporary tank role. Mental Quickness is a new row 5 talent increasing spell damage and healing by a percentage of Intellect. Improved Stomstrike requires Stormstrike as a prerequisite and is a new row 5 talent granting a chance for Stormstrike to activate Mana regeneration while casting spells, plus a chance for Stormstrike's cooldown to reset each time you Dodge or Parry, enabling Spirit-based Mana regen and more active Stormstrike use while tanking. Maelstrom Weapon is a new row 6 talent granting a chance on every melee attack to stack charges of Maelstrom, reducing the cast time of Lightning Bolt; at sufficient ranks and charges, Lightning Bolt becomes instant. Rage of the Farseer is the new 31-point gold medal talent: a 3 minute cooldown that increases attack speed by 30% for 25 seconds, inspired by Heroism and Bloodlust but built as a personal cooldown instead of a raid or party wide event. Removed: Shield Specialization. Moved to baseline: Enhancing Totems, Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery, and Improved Weapon Totems.
Restoration talents: Totemic Focus moves from row 2 up to row 1 and now also discounts Totemic Projection and totem Call spells. Mindfulness is a new row 2 talent letting Shaman regenerate Spirit while spellcasting, deliberately placed to make it more accessible for Elemental Shaman. Natural Grace, formerly Healing Grace, moves from row 3 up to row 2, now reduces all threat from spells, and moves earlier to make it more accessible to Elemental Shaman. Tidal Focus now also grants increased chance to hit with all spells and attacks. Improved Reincarnation now also increases maximum health by a percentage. Ancestral Healing moves to row 3 down from row 2. Healing Focus now requires only 3 talent points for full effect instead of 5. Water Shield is the new 11-point gold medal talent granting a new Shield ability; only one shield can be active at a time, and the 3 globes on this shield grant Mana when an attack hits you or when one of your healing spells gains a critical result. Tidal Mastery no longer affects Lightning spells. Restorative Totems has its bonus to Healing Stream Totem doubled. Mana Tide Totem moves from the 31-point gold medal to the 16-point gold medal. Healing Way is redesigned to increase the amount healed by Healing Wave by a percentage. Riptide is the new 31-point gold medal talent, requires Healing Way as a prerequisite, heals the target instantly and then periodically over 15 seconds, and increases the effectiveness of Chain Heal casts on targets with your Riptide by 25%, with a 6 second cooldown. Removed: Nature's Guidance.
Per Blizzard, Shaman are masters of totems and use them to buff, heal, and solve problems for any party or raid they join. While Shaman have gained new capabilities to move and summon many totems at once, the choice of totems and totem placement remains a critical skill differentiating experienced Shaman. They can be effective melee or spell damage dealers and healers of parties or raids, tapping into their unique chaining spells for damage or healing. They are among the sturdiest of classes, wearing Mail armor and a Shield, with a diverse toolkit of abilities to solve problems but no effective crowd control. Shaman will always be welcome in a group but also need allies to make up for their weaknesses in control and survivability.

Shared talent structure
Per Blizzard, both classes share the same Forever talent framework. Talents become available starting at level 10 and continue using a familiar structure, including one-point milestone talents at 11, 21, and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point milestone. To change your talents, including Legacy talents, visit a class trainer in one of the major cities. Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40.
Per Blizzard, class abilities and talents may continue to evolve throughout the beta test and are subject to additional changes. Treat exact numbers, gold medal placements, and removed talents as beta-state facts that can shift before launch. The structural takeaways are more durable: Mage keeps Polymorph, Frostfire Bolt, and the Arcane Blast stack loop as its identity anchors, while Shaman keeps totem placement and totem logistics as its identity anchors.
Across both classes, the anti-farm-bot theme recurs: Cone of Cold duration cut, Improved Blizzard slow capped at 40%, Arcane Concentration and Impact reduced on low rank casts, Elemental Focus reduced on low rank casts, and Magic Absorption given a 1 second trigger cooldown. Per Blizzard, these are deliberate responses to gold farmers and experience boosters abusing low-risk repetitive mechanics.
