The numbers

Per Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott, the turn-based RPG from France's Sandfall Interactive generated $366 million via 8.7 million copies sold. The breakout is 58.8 percent on Steam, 35.7 percent on PS5, and just 5.5 percent on Xbox. France is the game's third biggest market on both Steam and PlayStation, which Elliott calls understandable French pride.

Game Pass cannibalization

E33 launched straight into Game Pass, and Alinea counts 4.3 million people who accessed it that way across console and PC. A little under 700K Xbox players used their subscription to play it this year. That is why the Xbox share of purchases is so low, a dynamic Elliott labels Game Pass cannibalization. The 1.5-year deal ended October 16, and Xbox purchase trend has started turning positive since, though he says the jury is still out.

How past GOTY winners compare

GameEst. copies soldEst. revenue
Elden Ring (2022 winner)36.4 million$2 billion
Baldur's Gate 3 (2023)23.2 million$1.2 billion
Astro Bot (2024)4.7 million$291 million
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025)8.7 million$366 million

Alinea puts the four winners combined at 73 million copies and $3.8 billion. Elliott also notes the pattern: recent GOTY winners are mostly mid-budget studios outside traditional AAA cost centers, not $300M Hollywood productions.

The 2026 GOTY odds are open with GTA 6 looming, but the numbers here show mid-budget games can still put up billion-dollar-adjacent totals.
