An overlay that knows the game window

PD2 Trader is a desktop companion for Project Diablo 2, the long running mod of Diablo II. It does four things that a player would otherwise do in a browser or a spreadsheet: check what an item is worth, list items for trade, track the value of a stash, and watch the corrupted zone rotation. The interesting part is not the feature list but where the interface lives. It is a transparent, undecorated, always on top window that covers the work area of the monitor containing the Diablo II window, and it re-fits itself when the game moves or regains focus.

That single window is also click through outside its panels. The frontend reports the rectangles of its visible panels to the Rust backend, and on Linux those become the GTK input shape. Everything outside the panels passes input to the game, so the overlay never steals a click from a fight. Panels are clamped inside the overlay so that a borderless game reaching under the taskbar keeps its controls on screen. It is the kind of detail that separates a tool people leave running from one they close after five minutes.

The stack is Tauri 2 with a React and TypeScript frontend and a Rust backend. The architecture document is unusually thorough for a project this size: it describes the IPC layer, the overlay panel registry, the market browser, the auth flow, the build pipeline and the error reporting split between Sentry and Grafana Faro. Rust owns window management, global hotkeys, the clipboard watcher and the chat watcher, while the frontend owns presentation and data providers. The repository is about 47 megabytes, which is small for a desktop app because Tauri uses the system webview rather than bundling a browser.

The platform story is Windows first, with a documented Linux port. The download page offers a Windows installer, and the repository includes a Linux migration note written around Bazzite with Wayland and a Proton compatibility layer. The port isolates Windows specific crates behind conditional compilation, uses x11rb to find the Diablo window and its geometry, and rebuilds click through behavior with the GTK input shape. It is honest about the assumption that the user can use a terminal and find installation directories. Linux is a documented path, not a supported consumer build.

From hotkey to clipboard

The price check is the core loop. A global hotkey or a clipboard change captures the item text, the frontend sends it to a search panel, and the panel queries the Project Diablo 2 API for prices. Requests to api.projectdiablo2.com carry the user's bearer token, which means the app authenticates as the player rather than scraping a public page. The site describes the flow as a single hotkey in game, and the architecture document shows the sequence: clipboard or hotkey, backend detection, frontend capture, API query, display.

Market search is a separate service. The dedicated market backend holds every PD2 listing, polls every 15 seconds, and applies filters, pseudo stats and stat sorts on the server. When that service is down, slow or rate limiting, the market panel says so and offers a retry rather than falling back to a different source. Saved searches live on pd2trader.com and are capped at 25, with 10 allowed to alert. While any saved search is alerting, the app reads a live server sent event stream and shows a toast with the search, item and price, deduplicated by ID and caught up after a reconnect.

The clipboard output is the feature that makes the tool feel native to the game. The Copy image button in the price check title bar puts the item on the clipboard as a PD2 style tooltip with its price and listing count, ready to paste into Discord or a trade post. The tooltip is drawn like the game's: name, runes, defense or damage, requirements and every property in the game's order, including socketed runes, gems and jewels. Lines the clipboard cannot represent, such as durability, chance to block and the required level of rare and crafted items, are left out rather than guessed. Stat rolls show their range the way the in game tooltip does with ranges enabled.

Quick List handles the other direction. Instead of checking a price, it helps list items for trade quickly, and a Manage Listings tab shows what is currently on the PD2 marketplace so listings can be updated or removed without opening a browser. The market panel also verifies a listing before an offer: it fetches the listing by ID, and if the item is gone it shows a toast and stops, while a repriced item asks for a second click to confirm. That is a small piece of friction that prevents the most common trade scam in a barter economy.

Net worth, zones and builds

Net Worth calculates the value of a stash on Ctrl+X, covering runes, currency, uniques and more, with history across the season. The ticker version is the more ambitious idea: a small in game display shows total worth in high runes, the change this session and high runes per hour. Clicking it opens a mini panel with a session chart, recent snapshots and start or stop controls, and optional toasts announce what changed, for example a Ber rune find or two Ist runes. A hotkey takes a snapshot on demand, and the ticker can be pinned to a corner or dragged anywhere on screen.

The corrupted zone timer answers a question every PD2 player asks: where should I farm right now. It shows which zones are corrupted in Hell games, with monster level 85, more density, more Worldstone Shards and Tier 1 maps, plus a countdown to the next 15 minute rotation. Clicking it lists upcoming zones and their start times. A game keeps the zones it was created with, so the timer tells the user to make a new game after a switch, and it can follow only the zones a player farms and toast when one comes up.

The Builds panel pulls the ladder into the overlay. It shows the most played classes, skills and gear of level 80 and above characters, and each character's gear, skills and build timeline. A player can open their own characters for gear up suggestions priced in high runes, inspect a trader's build from chat, or see the builds that wear an item from its price check. A Rune Exchange tab compares rune values at current rates, and 21 color themes, 11 dark and 10 light, apply instantly to every panel. Window transparency goes up to 90 percent so the game shows through the backgrounds.

The limits are the usual ones for a small companion app. It depends on two external services, the PD2 API and the pd2trader market backend, and it needs a PD2 account token for authenticated actions. Four contributors and 14 open items mean the maintenance margin is thin, and the Windows download is the primary supported path while Linux remains a documented port. The architecture document and the test setup suggest the maintainer cares about correctness, but a tool that reads your stash and talks to a marketplace is still a tool that needs your token, and that trade deserves a moment of thought before installing.

FAQ

What is PD2 Trader?
A desktop overlay for Project Diablo 2 that checks item prices, lists items for trade, tracks stash value and shows the corrupted zone rotation.

Is it an official Project Diablo 2 tool?
No. It is an independent community app that talks to the PD2 API and a separate market service using your account token.

Does it work on Linux?
There is a documented port for X11 and XWayland, tested around Bazzite with Proton. Windows is the primary supported platform.

Where do prices come from?
Price checks query api.projectdiablo2.com with your bearer token. Market search uses the pd2trader service, which polls listings every 15 seconds.

Can it update my marketplace listings?
Yes. A Manage Listings tab shows your current PD2 marketplace listings and lets you update or remove them.

Is my account data safe?
The app stores authentication locally and sends the token to the PD2 API. It is open source under MIT, so the request paths can be audited.

Bottom Line

PD2 Trader is a focused utility that solves real problems for a specific game, and it solves them with more engineering care than the star count suggests. The game anchored overlay, the click through panels and the clipboard tooltip are the features that make it feel native, while the net worth ticker and zone timer turn idle time into information. The dependence on two external services and a small four person team is the risk, and the Linux path is a documented project rather than a product. For a Project Diablo 2 player who trades regularly, it replaces a browser tab, a spreadsheet and a stopwatch with one overlay, which is exactly what a companion app should do.
