Playden: Steam Games Run Directly on Jailbroken PS5
By Indie Kings | October 24, 2026
Updated October 24, 2026: Playden is a launcher for Steam games running directly on a jailbroken PlayStation 5, using Wine for PS5 instead of requiring Linux. A VideoCardz report and the project's compatibility list cover what works so far.

What Playden does
Playden is a PS5 homebrew launcher that signs into Steam and lets users browse their library, download games, and launch them without any PC or Linux console. The Windows games are not streamed; they run locally through prospero-win, a port of Wine written for the PS5. Each game becomes its own native PS5 app tile, so it can be started directly from the Home screen, and each game gets its own private Windows environment called a bottle.
How it works
Playden hands off a downloaded game to a separate native PS5 application that runs Wine with the game's settings. Because each game is isolated, files, settings and crashes stay inside that app. Graphics use Direct3D 8 through 11 via DXVK, Direct3D 12 via vkd3d-proton (kit 0.11 and later), OpenGL through Mesa Zink, and Vulkan through the PS5 GPU's native Vulkan driver. The runtime kit holds the Wine, Mesa and DXVK layers, installed once from GitHub releases and then updated automatically.
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Playden app | Launcher: Steam sign-in, library, downloads, per-game settings |
| prospero-win | Wine port that runs Windows games on PS5 |
| runtime kit | Wine, DXVK, vkd3d-proton, Mesa Zink |
| Each game is its own PS5 app tile | Independent bottle per game, isolated crash domain |
What works so far
The project maintains an open compatibility list updated 2026-10-24. As of the latest report, a broad set of Steam titles reach playable states on firmware 13.60, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Dead Cells, Portal 2, and Deep Rock Galactic. Partial status covers several launch titles, and marked broken or refused counts a smaller set. Several D3D12 titles need vkd3d-proton rather than leaving Direct3D 12 automatic, because the auto-detection picks them into a black loading screen. The breakdown also notes that games with third-party launchers, specific anti-cheat systems, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, or Steam-only DRM can be refused outright.
Security and risks
Playden keeps the same Steam session token on the jailbroken PS5 as plaintext file data, unencrypted. Anyone with FTP access could read it. It writes to your Steam Cloud saves after play, which can overwrite good saves if a bug fixes a conflict. It needs root access and lets a running game get elevated rights, so only trusted games should be run. The README explicitly warns that this is alpha software and Valve does not support third-party clients.
What is planned
The project lists next steps as Steam game updates, support for other stores such as GOG and Epic, third-party launcher launches from Rockstar, EA and Ubisoft, and community recipes in the preset chooser. Install and update tooling currently relies on Python 3 over FTP on the local network and optional install scripts that require a Mac with Apple Silicon.
FAQ
Is this safe?
Playden is alpha software. The Steam session token is stored unencrypted on the console and it writes to Steam Cloud. Back up your saves before relying on sync.
Do the games run on the PS5 hardware?
Yes, locally, not streamed. They run in a private Wine environment on the PS5.
Which games work?
Many do on firmware 13.60, including Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Portal 2, Dead Cells and Deep Rock Galactic. A smaller set refuses, breaks, or plays partially.
Do I need a Linux VM?
No. The project ships a ready runtime kit built from a Linux x86-64 machine or VM; end users download releases.
Does multiplayer work?
Not currently supported. Online multiplayer is listed as unsupported.
Who maintains Playden?
leolobato (GitHub), 428 stars, GPL-3.0; compatibility list updated 2026-10-24.
Who maintains it?leolobato. Star count 428; license GPL-3.0.
Bottom Line
Playden closes a real gap: it turns a Steam library into a direct-run console library without booting Linux. The technical payload of a paid-for gadget plus an open compatibility database means informed early adopters already have a playable portfolio spanning shooter, roguelite, deckbuilder and racing titles. The tradeoff is acceptance of the same Surface and Cloud risks Valve is attached to with its official Steam client, which you need only take once.
