One engine, three games

TRX stands for Tomb Raider X, and it is an open-source reimplementation of Tomb Raider 1, Tomb Raider 2 and Tomb Raider 3, also called the Community Edition. The project describes itself as decompilation plus open-source replacements for proprietary components, and the result is a single engine that can run all three games and custom levels while respecting each of the distinct classic engines' mechanics. That last clause is the difficult part. The three games look similar, but their movement rules, collision behavior and level formats differ, and a single engine has to preserve those differences instead of flattening them.

The README answers the first question a player asks: all three games are fully playable from beginning to end. The supported platforms are Windows, Linux and macOS. Controllers work out of the box, and the Controls menu supports fully customizable bindings, multiple layouts, up to three-key combo shortcuts and two binding slots per action. The project also adds modern conveniences that were not in the originals: a photo mode, 3D pickups, skybox support, a customizable draw distance, a developer console, detailed level stats, an enemy health bar, UI scaling and a PS1-style interface with expanded options.

The rendering work is where the project shows its ambition. The showcase includes restored reflections, skyboxes and texture fixes, but the README is explicit that HD texture packs are not planned. That is a deliberate boundary. TRX is not a remaster with new art. It is a reimplementation that preserves the original assets while making the engine easier to run, modify and extend. The project also says TR4 work is well underway and early, and that tickets for problems specific to TR4 raised before the game is fully supported will most likely be closed.

1.11.1 is a movement patch

Version 1.11.1 is a patch released three days after 1.11, and its notes read like a list of regressions caught by players. The first fix is Lara not rotating her torso to lock onto targets while crouched, a regression from 1.11. The second is Lara crouching or sprinting on her own after a cutscene when toggle controls are enabled. The third is Lara sliding to keyholes and puzzle holes instead of walking to them. None of these are new features, but each one changes how the game feels in the first ten minutes.

The UI section fixes a set of smaller but visible problems. The default pause screen background in TR3 and TR4 is now monochrome, the default bars in TR1 no longer use smooth colors, and missing item names and menu text in non-English languages were restored. The gameplay section fixes a green glow under Lara in New Game+, a garbled icon when she picks up an item added by a mod, and a freeze when loading a New Game+ save. The rendering section fixes rotated pickups, such as the TR4 small medipack, disappearing at the edge of the screen.

The installer and mod fixes are the practical ones. The Windows installer no longer has performance problems when it detects a disc image source, a regression from 1.11. The game no longer crashes when its own scripts or modules are missing, which matters for anyone installing a mod or moving a folder. Water current behavior in TR1 and TR2 is fixed when Lara is using a UPV. The release also fixes a case where some locked TR4 cameras could be broken by using look or drawing weapons. These are not glamorous changes, but they are the difference between a project that ships a feature release and one that supports it.

The 1.11 release on September 19 was the feature release that 1.11.1 patches. It added swamp sidesteps, the ability to turn while shimmying along monkey bars, monkey bar grabs when jumping forward under low ceilings, and a long list of original bug fixes. It also added the toggle controls that caused one of the 1.11.1 regressions. The three-day gap between the two releases is a useful signal: the team is watching reports and shipping corrections quickly, rather than saving them for a quarterly update.

Mods, Lua and the TR4 runway

TRX supports custom levels and a Lua API, and 1.11.1 adds several properties that modders have been asking for. Weapon specs and the weapon object gain given_in_ngplus. Lara gains back_gun and holsters_gun, plus head_rot, torso_rot, left_arm_rot and right_arm_rot for controlling her pose. The release also adds move_angle and turn_rate, and fixes potential crashes when setting out-of-bounds positions on items. Those additions are small individually, but together they let a script control how Lara holds a weapon and how her upper body aims, which is the difference between a static pose and a usable animation.

The environment variable TRX_DIR is another quality-of-life change. It moves the whole installation tree at once, so a user can relocate a game and its mods without editing paths one by one. The project also fixed a crash when its own scripts or modules were missing. That sounds like an edge case until a mod install goes wrong, at which point a clear failure is much better than a crash with no explanation.

The TR4 runway is the most interesting part of the roadmap. The README says TR4 work is well underway and early, and 1.11.1 already includes a TR4 pause screen change and a TR4 locked camera fix. The latest commit on October 29 fixes a Burial Chambers flame trigger in the TR4 data. The repository is about 265 megabytes, which is large for a game project because it carries data for multiple games and languages. With 154 open issues and pull requests and 30 contributors, the maintenance load is visible, but the direction is clear.

The licensing is GPL-3.0, which matters for anyone who wants to reuse the engine or ship a fork. The project was created on February 7, 2021, so this is not a weekend experiment. It is a five-year reimplementation effort that has reached the point where all three original games are playable and the fourth is being pulled into the same engine. The 1.11.1 patch is a good moment to try it, because the worst regressions from the feature release are already fixed.

FAQ

What is TRX?
An open-source reimplementation of Tomb Raider I, II and III, also called the Community Edition, built from decompilation and open-source replacements.

Are all three games playable?
Yes. The README says all three are fully playable from beginning to end.

Which platforms are supported?
Windows, Linux and macOS, with controller support and customizable controls.

What changed in 1.11.1?
It fixes Lara movement, UI text and colors, New Game+ issues, pickups at screen edges, installer performance, water currents and several Lua and TR4 problems.

Does it support Tomb Raider IV?
TR4 work is underway and early. Some TR4 fixes are already in 1.11.1, but the game is not fully supported yet.

Can I mod it?
Yes. TRX supports custom levels and a Lua API, and 1.11.1 adds new Lara pose and weapon properties.

Bottom Line

TRX 1.11.1 is a patch that shows a mature fan reimplementation doing the unglamorous work. The three original Tomb Raider games are playable, the controller and display options are better than the originals, and the Lua API is deep enough for custom levels. The 1.11.1 fixes are mostly small, but they target the regressions that make a reimplementation feel wrong: Lara sliding to a keyhole, a menu losing its text, a save freezing on load. TR4 is the next test, and the early fixes suggest the team is already there. Install it for the games you own, keep a clean save, and expect the TR4 branch to move quickly.
