The Witcher 3 Has 48 Quests You Can Lose Forever. Nobody Warns You
Tuesday, September 29, 2026By Indie Kings | September 29, 2026
Updated September 29, 2026: The Witcher 3 has 48 quests that can be lost permanently, and almost none of them warn you before the deadline passes. The most-cited completionist resource for the game instructs you on 47 of them, with the cutoff condition given for each. The 48th is Magic Lamp, and that resource tells you to do it immediately without explaining why. A separate guide supplies the missing mechanism: you fail it by leaving the elven ruins at any point, and you can also lose it entirely by skipping a single dialogue option at the end of the previous quest. Every item on this page is at zero across this site's coverage.

Read this before you start, not after
None of the quests on this page have a confirmation prompt, an on-screen warning, or a journal entry telling you that a window is closing. There is no fail notification and no achievement for avoiding them. The only signal is a line of text in a community guide, and if you miss it the quest is gone for that save.
The practical consequence is that a single playthrough cannot see all of this content. The Remastered is a free update to a game most owners have already finished, which means the majority of players reaching these quests are on a new save or a new character, and a large share of them will rush the main story because they remember the plot. The main story is exactly what closes the largest window in the list.
One framing note before the data, because it governs how much weight to put on it. The Remastered is a re-release carrying the original's content with a rebuilt renderer, and this site has covered it as a free update with visual and gameplay changes. Every fail state documented here comes from the original 2015 release, and none has been verified in the Remastered build, because verifying them requires playing the game and this site does not. The quest structure is not something a remaster changes, and the one source that addresses the remastered version says its structure is preserved. Treat the list as authoritative for the original and as a strong prior for the Remastered, not as a tested claim about the current build.
The Isle of the Mists wall, and the sixteen quests behind it
This is the single most expensive mistake available in the game, and it is not flagged anywhere in the client's UI.
The Isle of the Mists is a main-story quest in Velen. When you complete it, a substantial number of open quests across Velen and Novigrad become unavailable permanently. A player who follows the main storyline at a normal pace walks straight through that door.
| Quest | Zone | Window closes at |
|---|---|---|
| Ciri's Room | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| Races: Crow's Perch | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| An Invitation from Keira Metz | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| A Towerful of Mice | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| A Favor for a Friend | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| For the Advancement of Learning | Velen | Isle of the Mists, and spare Keira, sending her to Kaer Morhen |
| The Fall of the House of Reardon | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| Ghosts of the Past | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| Return to Crookback Bog | Velen | Isle of the Mists |
| An Eye for an Eye | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| A Dangerous Game | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| Cabaret | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| Carnal Sins | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| Now or Never | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| Redania's Most Wanted | Novigrad | Isle of the Mists |
| The Gangs of Novigrad | Novigrad | Fails on meeting Roche's contact during a later part of Get Junior |
That is sixteen quests, and the cluster includes content players actively want. A Dangerous Game is the Gwent quest that unlocks three rare cards, and it is the one most likely to be skipped by a player who has not realised it is time-limited at all. For the Advancement of Learning adds a second condition on top of the window: Keira has to be spared and sent to Kaer Morhen, which is a choice made much earlier in the same zone.
A note on sourcing, because this is the load-bearing claim in the article. The Isle of the Mists cutoff is documented in the community quest-order resource and is consistent with how the zone is structured, but it is not confirmed on IGN's wiki, whose choices and consequences page dates from December 2022 and does not cover the window. If you are mid-playthrough, the safe move is to clear the Velen and Novigrad side content above before touching the Isle of the Mists, which costs an evening and cannot be undone later.
The Griffin in White Orchard is a five-quest wall
The second wall is worse in one specific way: it is in the first ten minutes of the game.
The Griffin quest in White Orchard is the game's first real fight, and a player who has played the original remembers it as the obvious thing to do first. Completing it closes five side quests in the same village, all of which the resource instructs you to finish beforehand with the same four-word warning.
| Quest | Zone | Window closes at |
|---|---|---|
| Twisted Firestarter | White Orchard | The Griffin |
| A Frying Pan, Spick and Span | White Orchard | The Griffin |
| Precious Cargo | White Orchard | The Griffin |
| Missing in Action | White Orchard | The Griffin |
| On Death's Bed | White Orchard | The Griffin; started during The Beast of White Orchard when you speak to Tomira |
On Death's Bed has the tighter condition of the five, because it is not simply available in the zone. It begins as a conversation with Tomira during The Beast of White Orchard, which is itself a quest a player can also rush. The chain of dependency is the sort of thing that is invisible on a map and completely obvious once written down.
Magic Lamp, and the instruction that never says why
This is the entry that justified writing the page, because it is where the most widely used resource and the detailed guide describe the same quest and one of them is missing the mechanism.
The quest-order resource lists Magic Lamp at level 6 in Velen with a single line of guidance: "Must be completed right after doing 'Wandering in the Dark'." It gives no reason. Elsewhere in the same sheet, two separate notes say to accept Keira's request at the end of Wandering in the Dark and to complete Magic Lamp right away, and a third note warns that a later quest requires the lamp in order to reveal ghosts. So the resource knows the quest is load-bearing and time-sensitive, and it still does not say what kills it.
A separate guide supplies the mechanism, and it is worse than a deadline. Per that guide, there are two separate ways to lose Magic Lamp, and neither is recoverable without reloading a save.
- You can miss the trigger. The quest is offered at the very end of Wandering in the Dark, while Geralt is still inside the elven ruins with Keira Metz. It is a single dialogue choice. Select the wrong option, or skip past it, and Magic Lamp fails automatically. There is no way to restart it from outside the ruins.
- You can fail it mid-quest. Leaving the elven ruins at any point during Magic Lamp fails the quest. If you follow Keira out of the chamber before solving the brazier puzzle, it is gone.
So the instruction "do it right after Wandering in the Dark" is correct and undersells the problem twice over. It is not that the quest expires on a timer. It is that a player who wanders out of a ruin, or who clicks through a dialogue option, loses it silently and permanently, and the natural behaviour of a player who has been in the ruins a while is to step outside.
The puzzle itself is short, and the reason it traps people is that failure is silent too. Four statues stand in a line, each with a brazier, with a riddle carved between them. Lighting them in the wrong order does nothing at all: the sequence resets, no message appears, and the game gives no feedback. The solution is a fixed order, and light them in this sequence.
| Step | Which brazier |
|---|---|
| First | Right of the archway |
| Second | Left of the archway |
| Third | Far right |
| Fourth | Far left |
The riddle gives the positions away, and it is worth reading rather than memorising, because the statue attributes correspond to the lines. It reads, in full: "Four guardians, four flames, standing proud in line / The First to light his fire dared not march on the end / The Second, by the First, played a woeful lament / The Third kept close to his faithful beast / The Fourth marched not beside the First, yet like the Second, played a tune. / And thus they stood o'er their queen, who slept beneath flickering stars."
One consequence worth stating separately, because it is a second-order loss rather than a quest loss. Magic Lamp is a step in the Keira Metz relationship track, and failing it closes off certain dialogue outcomes later in Velen. The detailed guide is careful about the size of that: skipping it does not lock you out of all Keira content, it closes specific outcomes. [NEEDS VERIFICATION] That characterisation comes from a single small outlet and has not been checked against a second source.
The quests that die when you walk away
A third category fails for a reason that has nothing to do with story progression, and it is the one most likely to catch a player who is otherwise being careful.
Several quests in the game are proximity sensitive. They exist in a small area, they do not persist as markers once you have left, and walking out of the radius before starting or finishing them removes them permanently. The resource flags each of these in the same words, and the repeated phrase in the underlying data is "proximity sensitive and will fail if you leave the area."
| Quest | Zone | How it dies |
|---|---|---|
| Never Trust Children, part one | Novigrad | Proximity sensitive; fails if you leave the area |
| Finders Keepers | Skellige | Proximity sensitive; fails if you leave the area |
| Never Trust Children, part two | Skellige | Proximity sensitive; fails if you leave the area |
| Crime and Punishment | Skellige | Proximity sensitive; find the sister in Rogne |
| Strumpet in Distress | Novigrad | Time sensitive interaction outside the Novigrad docks; fails once you have passed the area |
| Extreme Cosplay | Blood and Wine | Disappears if found and then left without starting it |
Two of these have a further condition that makes them harder than the label suggests. For Fame and Glory in Skellige requires that two specific soldiers survive, with exploding necrophages in the fight, and the quest does not complete successfully otherwise. The Great Escape in Novigrad requires you to free the other prisoners after getting the key, and that has to happen before you speak to Margarita for the second time.
The full list of 48, by cutoff
Grouped by what closes the window, because the grouping is more useful to a player than a flat alphabetical list. Everything here is from the quest-order resource unless noted.
- The Isle of the Mists, sixteen quests. Ciri's Room, Races: Crow's Perch, An Invitation from Keira Metz, A Towerful of Mice, A Favor for a Friend, For the Advancement of Learning, The Fall of the House of Reardon, Ghosts of the Past, Return to Crookback Bog, An Eye for an Eye, A Dangerous Game, Cabaret, Carnal Sins, Now or Never, Redania's Most Wanted, and The Gangs of Novigrad, which has its own separate trigger.
- The Griffin, five quests. Twisted Firestarter, A Frying Pan Spick and Span, Precious Cargo, Missing in Action, and On Death's Bed.
- Proximity sensitive, six quests. Never Trust Children in both its Novigrad and Skellige parts, Finders Keepers, Crime and Punishment, Strumpet in Distress, and Extreme Cosplay.
- DLC cutoffs, six quests. In Hearts of Stone, A Midnight Clear is available only during Dead Man's Party and is the only way to romance Shani in the entire game; the trigger is one dialogue line at the end of the wedding, and choosing to leave locks out both the quest and the romance. Evil's First Soft Touches contains a missable bandit camp. In Blood and Wine, The Warble of a Smitten Knight fails if you start Capture the Castle first, The Perks of Being a Jailbird must be done before going down to do the laundry, Using Your Loaf has the same constraint, Scenes From a Marriage has a missable memory under the gazebo, and The Beast of Toussaint has a missable trophy if you fight Golyat without it.
- Isle of the Mists prerequisites, two quests. A Walk on the Waterfront must be done before Count Reuven's Treasure, and Ginter must not be allowed to die.
- Skellige access, one quest. The Mysterious Passenger requires Calm Before the Storm to be completed first.
- Personal condition, one quest. For Fame and Glory, the two soldiers must survive.
- Trophy and dialogue, the remainder. Gwent: High Stakes in Novigrad must be won at the tournament to get the missable cards and beat Tybalt for the Gwent Master achievement. The King is Dead Long Live the King has a beard-dependent Yen line that a source notes was altered by a previous update. The Man from Cintra has a unique Anna Henrietta line if you wear Olgierd's outfit. Brothers in Arms: Velen has a reward available if you still carry Gaunter O'Dimm's mark at the end of the main game.
- Magic Lamp, one quest, from a different source. Fails if you leave the elven ruins, or if you skip the accept dialogue at the end of Wandering in the Dark.
Where this comes from, and what you should verify
Being direct about the foundation of this page, because a completionist list is exactly the kind of thing that gets treated as authoritative when it should not be.
The backbone is a community-maintained Google Sheet, a quest-order project credited to ChrisRi with additional detail from a contributor called xLetalis. It exports as CSV without authentication, and it contains 1,089 rows across eight zones with 458 quest entries, each carrying a suggested level, and 326 of those carrying free-text detail. Forty-seven quests have an explicit fail or miss warning in that detail column. The sheet's own structure declares its purpose as completing every quest without missing or failing anything, and it tracks a completion percentage in its header.
Three things about that source should give a reader pause, and all three are reasons the list is useful rather than reasons to discard it.
First, the sheet's data is from 2015, predating the remaster by a decade. Second, a column that appears to be a missable flag reads FALSE for all 458 entries, which cannot be right given that the sheet exists to document missable content, and the real fail-state information is in a free-text column instead. Anyone parsing this data programmatically and trusting that flag will conclude the game has no missable quests. Third, the fail conditions are prose, not structured, so they had to be read rather than filtered.
Against that, IGN maintains a 454-page wiki for this game with individual pages dated and bylined, and it is the route to use for verifying any single quest's existence and its basic conditions. It does not, however, document the Isle of the Mists window. The one source that supplies the Magic Lamp mechanism is a small single-author outlet, and the verdict on that quest's consequences is marked unverified above.
Two of the DLC entries have since been confirmed against a second source, and one of them is sharper than what is written above. IGN's walkthrough, updated August 14, 2026, states that A Midnight Clear is frustratingly easy to miss out on permanently because it is only accessible during Dead Man's Party, and that the trigger is telling Shani "I'd like to stay a bit longer." Choose the alternative line, or leave the venue before finishing, and both the quest and the Shani romance are locked out. That is a second, independent confirmation of a cutoff that the sheet gives only as a location instruction, and it adds the detail that the romance is unrecoverable rather than merely the quest.
Extreme Cosplay is the other one confirmed, and IGN adds the specific trap: the quest sits on the road northeast of Francollarts, directly on the route players walk while under-levelled on the main quest La Cage au Fou, so the quest most likely to be abandoned is abandoned by players who do not realise they are abandoning it. IGN's advice is to finish it before leaving the area or reload a save.
So the honest ranking is: the cutoffs are well-attested for the original release and unverified for the Remastered; the Isle of the Mists cluster remains the highest-value and least independently confirmed item here; the Magic Lamp mechanism is the best-sourced single correction; and the two DLC entries above now have a second source each.
FAQ
How many quests in The Witcher 3 can you permanently miss?
Forty-eight are documented with an explicit cutoff condition. Forty-seven come from the community quest-order resource, which gives the exact trigger for each, and the 48th is Magic Lamp, which that resource instructs you to complete immediately without explaining why, while a separate guide documents that it fails if you leave the elven ruins or if you skip the accept dialogue at the end of Wandering in the Dark. None of the 48 can be recovered without reloading a save made before the failure.
What is the Isle of the Mists and why does it matter?
It is a main-story quest in Velen, and completing it permanently closes sixteen side quests spread across Velen and Novigrad, including A Dangerous Game, which unlocks three rare Gwent cards, and For the Advancement of Learning, which has a second condition requiring you to spare Keira and send her to Kaer Morhen. Nothing in the game's interface warns you. If you are mid-playthrough, clear that side content before you complete the Isle of the Mists.
Do I lose quests by killing the Griffin in White Orchard?
Yes, five of them. Twisted Firestarter, A Frying Pan Spick and Span, Precious Cargo, Missing in Action, and On Death's Bed all close when you complete the Griffin, and the Griffin is the first real fight in the game. On Death's Bed is the awkward one, because it does not simply appear in the village: it starts as a conversation with Tomira during The Beast of White Orchard, so a player who rushes that quest loses the follow-up as well.
How do I complete the Magic Lamp brazier puzzle?
Light the braziers in this order: right of the archway first, then left of the archway, then far right, then far left. Lighting them out of order resets the sequence with no message and no feedback, which is why the puzzle traps people. The riddle carved between the statues encodes the same order, and it is worth reading once rather than memorising, because it gives the positions away through the statue attributes.
What are proximity sensitive quests and why do they fail?
They are quests that exist in a small area and do not persist once you have walked out of it, so leaving before starting or completing them removes them permanently. Never Trust Children in both its Novigrad and Skellige parts, Finders Keepers, Crime and Punishment, Strumpet in Distress, and Extreme Cosplay are all flagged this way. The practical rule is that if a quest is offered in a spot with no marker, complete it before you leave the area rather than noting it for later.
Does any of this apply to the Remastered, or is it only the original game?
The Remastered is a free update carrying the original's content with a rebuilt renderer, and the quest structure is not the kind of thing a remaster alters, but none of these 48 fail states has been verified in the current build because that would require playing the game. The one source that addresses the remastered version states that Magic Lamp's structure is preserved. Treat the list as authoritative for 2015 and a strong prior for the Remastered, and confirm anything you care about against your own save.
Bottom Line
The game never tells you. That is the whole finding, and it is worth stating more bluntly than a guide usually would.
There is no fail notification, no journal warning, and no achievement for avoiding any of this. There is a main-story quest in Velen that quietly closes sixteen side quests across two zones, including the one that gives you three rare Gwent cards, and a Griffin in the first ten minutes that quietly closes five more, and a brazier puzzle in an elven ruin where a wrong click costs you a quest permanently and the game says nothing at all. The people who lose them are overwhelmingly the people who remember the plot and push the main story, which is the majority of players arriving on a new save of a free update to a game they finished a decade ago.
The most useful single item here is Magic Lamp, because the resource almost every completionist uses tells you to do it immediately and stops there. The actual rule is harsher and more specific: do not leave the ruins, and do not click past the dialogue option. An instruction without a mechanism is the kind of thing that fails anyway, because the player does not know which of their hundred actions was the mistake. The rest of the list follows the same logic. The cutoff is only useful if you know what you are cutting it off from.
