1. Skyborne Elves: Design, Lore, and Skin Colors
The first topic was the Skyborne, the new playable elf race that sits behind the paid packs. Blizzard was set on having a new playable elf race in Forever, and the original idea was low-key: have the new elves start alongside humans. That was discarded in favor of something more creative. Reading between the lines, per Warcraft Tavern's recap, the Skyborne will be important to Forever lore and may tie into notable events, with Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker entering the conversation.
As for Quel'Thalas, the developers already have big plans for the region, and using it as a minor starting zone would have conflicted with those ambitions, per the Q&A. The panel also showed Skyborne character creation to highlight the skin tone range: not everyone has bright blue skin, with a variety of more understated colors available.
2. Character Models and the Classic vs Enhanced Choice
The HD and SD graphics toggle works on textures, but the animations are a different story. The team confirmed that while players can switch between the texture styles, character animations always use the modern skeletons for technical reasons. The modern look was meant to make Forever more approachable for new players, and those animations are required for the shiny models.
On first login, players are asked to pick a preferred style:
- Classic: disables transmogrification and quest tracking by default, and enables SD models.
- Enhanced: the modern visual stack.
Both choices can be adjusted manually later.
3. Realmless Rules and Global Events
The realmless approach aims to decouple the social experience from being stuck on a fixed realm. Players pick a preferred style out of Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Hardcore, and per the Q&A, moving to a different style requires a Character Transfer service. As covered on this site, Forever also uses realmless rulesets with shared worlds rather than traditional server lists.
On content, the developers went vague about big plans for global events. Ahn'Qiraj came up as an example: players will not get a surprise drop of it at release, but Warcraft Tavern's recap reads what was not said as a sign that something impressive is in motion for the iconic war effort in Forever. Oceanic players will predominantly play on Australian servers, though occasional cross-region grouping may introduce higher ping.
4. First and Last Names, Unique Per Region
Forever characters use both a first and last name, and the Q&A confirmed two rules: you must enter something as your last name, and the combination of first and last name will be unique per region across all gameplay styles. That means a name like Jane Smith is reserved region-wide, whether the character is on Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Hardcore.
5. Raid Sizes, No Flex, No Heroics, Faction Friction
Raid structure got detailed answers. Forever will not have flex raiding, but every raid tier will have both 10-player and 20-player versions, and certain raids will be built for 40-player groups. Barrow Deeps is planned as the 10-player max-level raid and Hyjal Summit as the 20-player raid, matching the official panel recap already covered on this site.
There will be no cross-faction raiding. The developers want to incentivize faction friction in Forever, or in other words emphasize the war in Warcraft. The Q&A also confirmed no heroic versions of dungeons and raids: the difficulty of group content is what it is.
6. PvP: No Rated, New Seasonal Honor Track
Blizzard values dueling and battlegrounds, but there are no current plans for rated PvP. Instead, a new seasonal PvP track for Honor will carry its own unique set of rewards, resetting each tier or season to keep things fresh. The team also plans to incentivize all kinds of PvP activities, rather than letting Alterac Valley farming become the easiest path to Honor.
7. Addons and Built-in Tools
Forever uses the modern addon API, which blocks certain addons that essentially play the game for the player. The developers said players should not need addons to play, and the game ships with a damage meter, cooldown tracker, and swing timer as default features, per the Q&A.
8. The Weekly Forever Podcast
Josh Greenfield, otherwise known as Aggrend, will start a weekly WoW podcast following Forever through its beta and eventual full release. The show will address player reception and concerns, host developer guests, and act as a place to learn more about Forever as it develops.
The Q&A answers in brief:
| Topic | Announcement |
|---|---|
| Skyborne | New elf race, some understated skin colors, big Quel'Thalas plans |
| Character models | HD and SD texture toggle, animations always modern skeletons |
| Realmless | Style change requires Character Transfer, Oceanic servers mostly Australian |
| Names | First and last name required, unique per region across all styles |
| Raids | 10 and 20 player versions, some 40 player, no flex, no heroics, no cross-faction |
| PvP | No rated, seasonal Honor track with unique rewards |
| Addons | Modern API blocks automation, built-in meter, cooldown tracker, swing timer |
| Podcast | Aggrend's weekly Forever show |
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Who was on the WoW Forever Developer Q&A?
Developers Randy Jordan, Josh Greenfield, Nora Mills, and Tim Jones, in a live panel on September 17 before the beta went live, per Warcraft Tavern's recap.
How do HD and SD character models work in Forever?
Players toggle between the two texture styles, but animations always use the modern skeletons for technical reasons. First login asks for a Classic or Enhanced preference.
Does WoW Forever have flex raiding?
No. Raid tiers come in 10-player and 20-player versions, with certain raids built for 40-player groups, and no heroic versions of group content.
Is there rated PvP in Forever?
No current plans. A new seasonal Honor PvP track with unique rewards will reset each tier or season.
Are names unique across realms in Forever?
Forever is realmless, and the first and last name combination is unique per region across all gameplay styles, per the Q&A.
Will GDKP be allowed in Forever?
No. The Q&A confirmed GDKP raiding is banned, along with a promised crackdown on gold selling and buying.
Bottom Line
The Q&A filled in most of Forever's remaining blanks: the Skyborne are deliberate and lore-heavy, HD and SD toggle separately from always-modern animations, names are region-unique, raids are 10 and 20 with some 40, there is no flex and no heroics, and rated PvP is out in favor of a seasonal Honor track. Add in built-in combat tools and Aggrend's weekly podcast, and Forever's identity is fully documented ahead of launch.
