Roach's Horse Upgrades in The Witcher 3 Remastered: All 31 Pieces

By Indie Kings | September 29, 2026

Updated September 29, 2026: Roach takes his own equipment, separate from yours, and it comes in 31 pieces across three slots: 18 saddles, 7 saddlebags and 6 blinders. Every one has a published number, and the numbers are the whole of the decision, because Roach's gear does not roll. The most useful fact in the tables below is not in any guide: each of the three free DLC horse sets is stat-identical to a base-game piece, so the DLC saddle you already downloaded for nothing is exactly as good as the one that costs crowns. Neither horse upgrades nor monster trophies appear in this site's coverage before now.

Three slots, and what each one actually does

Per IGN's guide, Roach can be upgraded with his own equipment, and these upgrades let you carry more items, increase overall speed on horseback, and decrease the chance of panicking when near enemies. That is three effects across three slots.

SlotNumber of piecesWhat it grantsRange
Saddle18Horse stamina+20 to +100
Saddlebag7Geralt's maximum inventory weight+30 to +110
Blinders6Horse fear level tolerance+20 to +60

One structural point governs everything else, and it is the reason these tables are useful rather than decorative. Roach's gear does not roll. Every saddle in the game is a fixed value, and IGN lists the value for all 31 pieces. There is no RNG, no rare tier and no reason to farm. If you know the number you want, you know exactly which item to obtain.

IGN also notes the two ways to get them: upgrades can often be found in guarded loot chests, or purchased from merchants, and that each item has several tiers of effectiveness.

All 18 saddles

The saddle is the stamina slot, and it has the widest spread in the game, running from +20 to +100. DLC pieces are marked, since the free ones are free and the expansion ones are not.

Caparison of Lament at +100 is the best saddle in the game by fifteen stamina, a bigger gap than any other tier in the list, and it comes from Hearts of Stone. Undvik at +80 is the best free option, and the next saddle above it is not a base-game item at all.

All 7 saddlebags

The saddlebag is the only slot that affects Geralt rather than Roach. It is the reason to care about this category on a DLC-heavy playthrough, because the top item comes from Blood and Wine and adds more carry weight than anything else in the game.

Beauclair Saddlebags+110Blood and Wine

Beauclair Saddlebags are the only Blood and Wine item in the entire horse catalogue, and they are the best in the game. IGN's page on the free DLC sets a practical floor for the whole slot: the Temerian Saddlebags are what you get by default, and the jump to +70 is where the slot stops being cosmetic.

All 6 blinders

Blinders are the smallest category and the one most likely to be ignored, because their effect is defensive and situational: they raise how much Roach tolerates before panicking near enemies.

Nilfgaardian Blinders+40Free DLC

The category caps at +60 and there is no Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine entry. IGN's guide does not state whether +60 is the maximum possible fear tolerance in the game or simply the end of the upgrade line, so treat the cap as the end of the list rather than a confirmed ceiling.

The DLC pieces are duplicates of the free ones

Reading the three tables together surfaces a pattern that none of the guides states, and it changes what you should spend money on.

Every free DLC horse piece is exactly equal to a base-game piece. All nine comparisons, taken straight from the tables above:

SlotFree DLC pieceBase-game equivalentBoth grant
SaddleTemerian SaddleEnhanced Saddle+25 stamina
SaddleNilfgaardian SaddleSuperior Racing Saddle+50 stamina

BlindersTemerian BlindersHorse Blinders+20 fear
BlindersNilfgaardian BlindersRacing Horse Blinders+40 fear
BlindersUndvik BlindersZerrikanian Blinders+60 fear

The pattern is exact across all three slots and all three sets. Temerian, Nilfgaardian and Undvik are the same three sets that ship as the free DLC, and each one lands precisely on a base-game tier rather than above it. Not one DLC piece outranks the free base-game option.

Two consequences follow. A player who has the free DLC already owns the equal of nine of the eighteen base-game pieces, and since the DLC download is free, that is nine upgrades obtained at no cost. And a player who wants the top tier in any slot should skip the DLC entirely and save for a base-game or expansion item, because the DLC never reaches the top.

Monster trophies, and an honest limit on this section

Monster trophies occupy the same slots as the three categories above, and this is the part most guides describe badly.

Per IGN, trophies are awarded as proof of a deed after a Witcher Contract that ends in a monster death, and every Monster Trophy can be equipped on the horse like other Horse Upgrades, with each granting its own passive buff. IGN's own wording is that buffs change dramatically from monster to monster.

The three IGN documents, with their effects:

TrophyEffectQuest obtained
Griffin Trophy+10% chance to dismember enemiesThe Beast of White Orchard
Noonwraith Trophy+5% experience from killing humans and nonhumansContract: Devil by the Well
Cockatrice Trophy+10% chance to dismember enemiesContract: Shrieker

This section is deliberately short, and the reason matters. IGN's Monster Trophies page lists exactly these three and no more. No other source with a complete trophy list was reachable, and this site will not guess at the rest. A trophy list of twenty items written from three sourced examples would be padding with invented numbers, which is worse than an acknowledged gap.

What can be said from the three examples is that trophy effects are not drawn from the same three stats as saddles, bags and blinders. Dismemberment chance and experience gain appear nowhere in the horse gear tables, so a trophy is a different kind of upgrade occupying the same slots, not a variant tier of a saddle. A player optimising Roach for stamina should not expect a trophy to substitute.

What is not verified

  • Nothing here is first-hand tested. This site has no copy of The Witcher 3 Remastered. Every value, item name and source attribution above is IGN's guide, which carries no visible revision date and predates the Remastered.
  • No source states whether the Remastered changed horse gear. The Remastered reworked the skill tree, added the Reforge appearance system, and rebalanced a number of systems. Whether Roach's 31 items, their values, or their availability were touched is not addressed by CD Projekt Red's change list as far as this article could establish. Treat the tables as inherited values.
  • The monster trophy list is incomplete and is presented as such. Three trophies are sourced. The rest of the game's trophies are not listed here because no reachable source itemised them, and inventing them is not an option.
  • Whether +60 fear tolerance is the true maximum is unconfirmed. It is the top of the blinder line, which is not the same claim.
  • Exact acquisition locations and merchant prices are not given for any horse piece. IGN gives only the general statement that upgrades are found in guarded chests or bought from merchants, and this article does not invent per-item locations.
  • The DLC parity finding is an inference from IGN's numbers, not a CD Projekt Red statement. The values are published side by side and the equality is exact in all nine cases, but no source comments on it.

What is verified: 31 horse pieces across 18 saddles, 7 saddlebags and 6 blinders, every item name, every value, and every DLC or expansion attribution. That Roach's gear does not roll and is found in chests or bought from merchants. That trophies occupy the same slots and grant monster-specific passive buffs. And the three sourced trophies with their effects and quests.

FAQ

How many horse upgrades are there in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Thirty-one, per IGN's guide, split across three slots: 18 saddles granting horse stamina from +20 to +100, 7 saddlebags granting Geralt inventory weight from +30 to +110, and 6 blinders granting fear tolerance from +20 to +60. The important structural point is that none of them roll, so every value in those tables is fixed and there is nothing to farm.

What is the best saddle for Roach?

The Caparison of Lament at +100 stamina, which comes from Hearts of Stone. It beats the next best saddle by fifteen stamina, the largest single gap between any two tiers in the catalogue. The best free option is the Undvik Saddle at +80, and the Zerrikanian Saddle is also +80.

Are the free DLC horse upgrades worth it?

Yes, because each of the three free DLC sets is stat-identical to a base-game piece, and the download costs nothing. The Temerian Saddle equals the Enhanced Saddle at +25, the Nilfgaardian Saddle equals the Superior Racing Saddle at +50, and the Undvik Saddle equals the Zerrikanian Saddle at +80. The same holds for their saddlebags and blinders, so the free DLC gives you nine upgrades equal to base-game gear.

Do any DLC horse upgrades beat the base game?

No, and this is worth knowing before spending anything. In all nine comparisons the free DLC piece is exactly equal to a base-game piece, never above it. To reach the top tier in any slot, skip the DLC sets and go for a base-game or expansion item instead, since the best saddle, the best saddlebag and the best blinder are all outside the free DLC range.

What do monster trophies do and where do they go?

Per IGN, they are awarded as proof after a Witcher Contract that ends in a monster's death, and every Monster Trophy can be equipped on the horse like other Horse Upgrades, each granting its own passive buff. The effects differ per monster rather than scaling from a shared stat, with the three IGN documents covering a +10 percent dismemberment chance and a +5 percent experience gain. This site lists only those three because no reachable source itemised the full set.

What is the best saddlebag?

The Beauclair Saddlebags at +110 maximum inventory, from Blood and Wine. IGN's catalogue shows they are the only Blood and Wine item across all 31 horse pieces, which makes them the single best horse item in the expansion. If you do not own the expansion, the Zerrikanian and Undvik Saddlebags at +100 are the joint best available.

Bottom Line

Thirty-one pieces, three slots, no RNG. Roach's gear is a fixed-value checklist rather than a grind, so the only decision is which of the published numbers you want, and this article gives you all of them. Take the best saddle you can reach, which is the Caparison of Lament at +100 from Hearts of Stone, and the best saddlebag, which is the Beauclair Saddlebags at +110 from Blood and Wine. Blinders are the slot to ignore unless Roach's panic is genuinely annoying you, because the whole category is six items topping out at +60.

The finding that saves money is the parity one. All nine free DLC horse pieces are exactly equal to a base-game item, never better, and the free DLC download is free. So claim it, use it, and do not spend crowns or hunt chests on the Temerian, Nilfgaardian or Undvik sets, because every tier they offer is available from the base game at the same number. Spend on Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine pieces instead, which is where the only items that outrank the base game live.

The gap here is the monster trophy list. IGN documents three, no reachable source documents the rest, and this article will not fill that space with invented numbers. What the three establish is enough to be useful: trophies take the same slots as saddles, bags and blinders but grant unrelated effects, so they are an extra option rather than a saddle substitute, and a player optimising for stamina should look past them.

And the standing caveat, which applies to every number on this page. These are inherited values from a guide that predates the Remastered. CD Projekt Red's change list says nothing about Roach's equipment, and this site has no copy of the game to check against. If a patch rebalanced horse gear, these tables are the thing to re-verify first.
