WoW Forever Hunter Leveling Guide: Specs, Lone Wolf, Races, and Petless Play
Friday, September 25, 2026By Indie Kings | September 25, 2026
Updated September 25, 2026: World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, 2026, with a level 1 to 60 cap, no flying mounts, and no level scaling. Hunters get three specs, a reworked talent tree, one confirmed new race and class pairing in Humans, and three headline talents including a petless option, Summon Hawk, and Strider Kick.
Build-stamp notice: Forever is in beta until October 21, 2026, and trees change between builds. Talent claims here are dated to pre-release captures and are not a level 60 balance claim. No point-by-point build is published, on purpose.

Choose your spec first
Hunter is the most mechanically split class in Forever. All three specs use bows or guns and a pet, but only one of them cares about the pet at all in the way most players expect. That choice drives everything from your first quest to your last dungeon pull.
| Consideration | Beast Mastery | Marksmanship | Survival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core relationship | The pet does the work and you support it | Long-range damage, positioning is everything | Close range, melee-adjacent, utility and traps |
| Solo leveling feel | Easiest, the pet holds threat while you shoot | Strong, but you control your own positioning | Hardest, you are in melee range of the problem |
| Dungeon role | Damage, and useful in groups short of a tank | Damage, scales with ranged uptime | Damage plus the most utility of the three |
| Hardest part | Not trusting the pet | Surviving being in the wrong place | Living in melee range as a cloth caster |
For a first character, Beast Mastery is the least demanding and Survival is the most rewarding if you already know the class. Marksmanship is a middle path that punishes the unprepared.
What actually changed for Hunters
Forever keeps the Classic-style talent structure with familiar rows and the 11, 21, and 31 point milestones, plus a new 16 point milestone. Blessing of Kings and Divine Spirit moved to baseline, which removes the old mandatory Strength Blessing shopping and frees budget for travel and consumables.
The reference transcription of Classic-to-Forever talent comparisons lists eleven Hunter entries. Three change how the class actually plays rather than just adding an option.
| Talent | What the comparison says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lone Wolf | An explicit petless option | Makes solo play and dungeon damage a real choice rather than a compromise |
| Summon Hawk | Reuses the Arcane Shot cooldown | Adds a second cooldown to the rotation instead of a new resource |
| Strider Kick | A new melee attack | Gives Survival and Marksmanship a close-range answer to being caught |
Read these as direction rather than build order. The trees are still moving, and no honest guide should hand you a point-by-point list built on a beta client that changes weekly.
Human Hunter and the Skyborne option
Hunter is the only class in the new race and class pairing list, because Human Hunter is a new combination. That makes Human a real consideration for a Hunter main rather than a generalist pick, and the rest of the racial list still applies on top.
Hunter is also one of the four classes both Skyborne factions can play, alongside Warrior, Rogue, and Druid. The trade is straightforward and the decision is permanent:
- Skyborne Hunter buys you a distinctive starting experience on Zephras Isle at levels 1 to 12, new racials, and a themed look.
- Skyborne costs you the price of the paid upgrade, and locks your faction at character creation.
- Human Hunter gives you the new pairing without the paywall or the faction lock.
Our racial reference has the full side-by-side if you are weighing it properly.
The petless question
Classic Hunters lean on the pet, and the community reaction to a petless option in Forever is usually to treat it as a trap. The talent comparison describes Lone Wolf as an explicit option, which is different from a trap. It is a statement that you are choosing solo and sustained damage over burst and crowd control.
The practical question is what your groups actually need. In a game with no group finder and Classic-style Looking For Group, you will be forming or joining groups in the first few hours. A Hunter who can hold a target while other players arrive is worth more to those groups than a Hunter optimising for personal damage.
Dungeon order by level band
Dungeons are not on the critical path in Forever, since there is no group finder and no Meeting Stone summon. Treat this as a route rather than a checklist, and note the overlaps, which let one clear cover two bands.
| Band | Dungeon | Hunter note |
|---|---|---|
| 13 to 18 | Hall of Thanes | First dungeon band, beneath Ironforge |
| 15 to 20 | Ruins of Lordaeron | Overlaps the first band, so one run covers both |
| 24 to 29 | Wetlands Excavation Site | First stretch with no dungeon, pure zone questing |
| 28 to 33 | City of Dalaran | Overlaps the tail of the previous band |
| 35 to 40 | The Drowned City | Pairs with the Riverglades stretch |
| 40 to 55 | Krol'dok Stronghold | Fifteen-level span, the biggest continuity run available |
| 48 to 53 | Alcaz Island Prison | Locked away since vanilla, now reachable |
| 55 to 60 | Blackmaw Hold | Tunnels lead toward the Barrow Deeps raid |
| 58 to 60 | Shaper's Terrace | Details still thin at announcement |
Ranged specs get the most value from the outdoor ogre dungeon in the Riverglades, because a fifteen-level band played at range with traps is a Hunter having a good time. Melee Survival gets more out of the same band than a ranged build does.
Respecs and experimentation
Beta testing on September 24 dropped respec costs to one silver, and Blizzard's talent revisions are still landing. Between a one-silver respec and trees that are actively being reworked, trying a spec early costs almost nothing and teaches you more than reading about it.
Season of Discovery class quests return to Forever, which gives a Hunter a natural early track that rewards learning the spec before you commit to a build you will later respec anyway.
FAQ
When does World of Warcraft: Forever launch?
November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST globally, included with an active subscription or Game Time, per Blizzard's announcement.
Is there a level cap and level scaling in Forever?
The cap is 60, there is no level scaling, and there are no flying mounts, per Blizzard's What is Next panel recap.
What new Hunter talents are confirmed?
Lone Wolf as an explicit petless option, Summon Hawk reusing the Arcane Shot cooldown, and Strider Kick as a new melee attack, from the Classic-to-Forever comparison.
Is Human Hunter a new combination in Forever?
Yes. Human Hunter is one of six new race and class pairings.
Can a Hunter be a Skyborne?
Yes. Warriors, Hunters, Rogues, and Druids are available to both Skyborne factions, but the race requires a paid upgrade.
Is there a dungeon finder in Forever?
No. There is a Classic-style Looking For Group browser that organises only, and players travel to entrances themselves.
Bottom Line
Hunter is the safest first class in Forever and the most flexible, which is why it keeps drawing players who are not sure what they want yet. Pick Beast Mastery if you want the pet to carry you, Survival if you want to be genuinely useful in a group, and treat Lone Wolf as a real option rather than a punishment. The Human pairing means you are not forced into the paid Skyborne race to get something new, and the respec cost dropped to a single silver, so the only expensive mistake here is overthinking a decision you can undo for one copper.
